Giant anteaters returned to the wild
The foundation contributed to a special mission in the Amazon: the return of a rare giant anteater and several smaller mammals from illegal trade. Among other things, we financed the specialized transport, the construction of rehabilitation facilities and a specially developed GPS harness to monitor the anteater.

Rescue operation in Peru
The rescue effort revolved around the release of several wild animals that had fallen victim to illegal trade. Sonny, a young giant anteater, was the figurehead of this special reinstatement. After months of rehabilitation, she was released back into the vast forests of the Amazon along with several sloths and an armadillo. This action was made possible through a collaboration between No Wildlife Crime Foundation and RAREC (Rainforest Awareness Rescue and Education Center), a Peruvian nonprofit organization that has been working for years to rescue, care for and reintroduce wildlife. RAREC captures animals rescued from the illegal trade, guides them through a careful rehabilitation process and, when possible, allows them to return to the wild. In doing so, the organization works closely with Peruvian authorities and local communities, aiming not only to rescue animals, but also to promote education and awareness for lasting change.

Major Programs and Initiatives
Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation: They catch wild animals rescued from the illegal trade. They receive medical care, nutrition and behavioral training, with the goal of return to the wild.
Reintroduction to the wild: After their recovery, animals such as giant anteaters, sloths and monkeys are released into safe natural areas. They are monitored to track their return.
Education and awareness: RAREC educates local communities and schools about conservation and the dangers of wildlife crime.
Scientific research: With GPS trackers, camera traps and surveys, they collect data on biodiversity, animal behavior and habitat. This knowledge helps in better protection of the area.
Protection of habitat: RAREC also manages its own rainforest and with this can also do relocations on its own property.
