Visiting bear baboons
Bear baboons are very strong. They are real rascals and you have to be careful with the males. They can be quite aggressive. Fortunately, bear baboon females are a lot friendlier. This became clear when I visited a female group in Namibia. Before I knew it, I was included in the group! What fun on the savannah.
Stuffed animals
Bear baboons love sociability and they live together in large groups. Such a group of baboons is called a troop and it can consist of as many as twenty to one hundred monkeys! To maintain a good relationship, baboons sometimes spend hours grooming each other. This is their way of saying: I love and respect you. Can you imagine how honored I felt when a female started fleecing me! Really careful she was not. She did pull my hair very hard....
"Bear baboons engage in adoption when a hatchling no longer has parents."
Beautiful red
As I walk among the female bear baboons, I notice something. Some females have very thick red buttocks and others do not. Why is that? Well, when the females are fertile, their backsides take on that bright color. For the males, this acts as a kind of signboard. 'Hello, I'm ready to have babies. 'Nice and clear!
