Why do hedgehogs sometimes chase toads?

Hedgehogs love toads! Sometimes a hedgehog licks a poisonous toad to steal the poison from its skin. And the hedgehog then smears that venom all over its own spines! This makes it extra painful for a predator to get pricked. How clever!

Male and female birds sometimes look completely different! What does this say about the relationship of a bird-couple?

Often, if the male and female look alike, they will tend their chicks together. But does the male look completely different? Then he does not look after the chicks.

How can dugongs stay underwater for so long?

Dugongs can hold their breath for up to 11 minutes. That's because their lungs are almost a meter long!

Can vultures smell rotting meat?

Most birds, even vultures, cannot smell well, but red-headed vultures are an exception! These vultures can smell a rotting carcass from miles away. They also pick up on the smell of gas. So do you see a whole swarm of vultures but no carcass? Then there just might be a gas leak nearby!

Baby koalas have a very dirty habit. Do you know what it is?

Koalas eat only poisonous leaves. This is possible because they have special bacteria in their bellies. But baby koalas don't have those yet. To get those important bacteria, the babies slurp up their mother's poop. Yuck!

What is a lemming year?

Every 3-4 years, mountain lemmings undergo a real population explosion. In such a 'lemming year' their number increases a hundred or even a thousand times! It gets very crowded on the tundra, so they move out together in search of more space.

How many parts does the stinging proboscis of a mosquito consist of?

Out of as many as six parts! That stabbing snout is like a Swiss army knife: two saws and two needles to open the skin, a needle with which she spits saliva into your skin and a straw to drink blood.

Do cheetahs have large or small canines?

To run such extremely fast sprints, a cheetah needs a lot of oxygen. That's why they have extra-large nostrils to make breathing easier. But that comes at the expense of space for their teeth. So cheetahs have comparatively small canines.
